Scruff is just as pathetic as Grindr, except that its messaging system actually works. But if you look at how they are trying to position themselves in the marketplace, you can just see all the internalised homophobia written all over it.
Just look at the promo above: “hottest real guys” and “gay dating app for men”. Its just another push towards heteromasculinity, borne from the insecurity and fear our homophobic society instills in us all.
The emphasis on “real men” is telling - its basically saying to be a “real man” you must fit their predetermined idea of what a “real man” is. Don’t fit their narrow definition and guess what? That’s right! You’re not a real man. Sorry, faggot! It’s off the the faggotty twink death camps for you!
The irony is this insecurity and fear is the opposite of what a “real man” would be (using the term “real man” in the context Scruff implies).
I went to the “guysofscruff” blog and had a look. In the first ten pages there was only one person who wasn’t white. Other than that, its just page after page of white, muscular, bearded men. That wouldn’t be as problematic if they don’t make the claim of “real men” - the implication is clear, if you’re not white, muscular, and bearded, then you are simply not a “real” man. Sorry fellas.
These apps are one of the main, and quickly becoming THE MAIN way our community communicates. And they are even more quickly becoming the reason why our community completely and utterly sucks arse.
lol calm the fuck down there buddy
I am a fan and user of the app, and I’m not affiliated with it in any other way. I’m just good at writing convincing headlines, I suppose, because that line about “real men” that you so eloquently dismantled was just something I wrote up to gain Tumblr followers.
Your argument is basically invalid considering you assumed I was a Scruff-managed blog, aside from it nicely and neatly attacking the way I view the world, and men, and how I communicate with both. Thanks for making fun of the fact that I enjoy muscular white dudes? I guess?
I don’t really have anything else to say. Stop overthinking gay on gay hate and use all that knowledge you apparently have to create change, rather than simply identify it.
